“Throughout the race, I felt as
if I heard Art’s voice
talking to me, coaching and encouraging me, just as if he was
running alongside. He talked about keeping good form, finding
the right
tempo, pacing and running within myself. These were all the lessons
we have been working on in my training over the last several
months, and I was able to draw upon that knowledge and strength
when I
need it. It really helped my confidence and my performance. By
the end of the race I was totally spent; I had left nothing out
on the course. I’m most proud that I was able to use the
training Art provided to develop a race plan and execute it perfectly.
This was my fastest 5K in several years, and has been a big boost
to my confidence as I begin training for the marathon.”

Championships
in Queenstown, New Zealand, 2003)
“I had always been an average runner
on my track team, but in less than a year since beginning work
with Art, I have become
one of the faster runners and am posting faster times than ever
before, thanks to Art. The workouts that I have been doing with
Art have put me in the best condition I have ever been in. I
have learned a lot about times, form, and how to train. It has
been
so motivating and helpful to have a coach like Art , the way
he runs his programs gets me excited to go out and run everyday...
He doesn’t just send me on my workouts, he explains them
to me and he is there for me when I have a hard day. I really
appreciate
all the work and time that Art has put into my program and there
is no one else who I would rather work with. I have come a long
way with running and in life because of all the contributions
Art has made.“

"Thank you for a class that really
has had a profound impact on my life. I learned so much from you
in such a short time.
"The lesson on pacing
came into play for me last weekend while hiking with my hiking
partner, a 74 year old man. He has
slowed down his hiking pace considerably in the last year (he's still stronger
than most people half his age!) and I have found the slowness to be annoying
and hard on my body, since I am not able to use my normal stride. Last Saturday,
we hiked to Thunder Lake, slowly. I tried to change my thinking to consider
pacing, like the lesson about pacing being everything in training.
I practiced walking
more slowly, and from the hip flexors. I placed my feet in a more grounded
fashion. Not only did I find my patience remained even, I also
enjoyed the whole day much
more, and had great fun being loose and flexible!
"I have also extended
my relaxed movement to my general everyday walking. This is going
to sound
very silly, coming from a 54-year-old woman, but at a very
early age my mother told me not to walk "like a floozy!" In other
words, don't move your hips when you walk – keep your feet straight
ahead and walk straight
as you can! Well, imagine my joy at going to your class and being told
to move my body, to be loose and relaxed! It is wonderful freedom, Art!
"I appreciate
the many ways you explained concepts and ideas. You seem to have a gift
for finding just the right way to help each individual understand."
